Environmental Stewardship for Teens
Lake Washington Watershed Internship
This year-long (October to September) internship teaches teens (14 yrs and older) to become informed stewards of their local community through mentoring, hands-on learning, restoration and stream monitoring. This program is offered in two different watersheds that fall within the larger Lake Washington watershed. Recruitment is during the month of September. Weekly meetings being in mid-October. Naturalist in Training
Ideal for high school students (14 years and older) who are interested in working with kids in a nature-type setting. This program helps teens attain invaluable skills while meeting school service learning hour requirements. Accepted teens will attend two required Saturday trainings in May and assist with two week-long summer camps at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue. Our camp programs run 10 weeks in the summer from the last week of June through the end of August. Stewardship Saturdays
Stewardship Saturdays are community volunteer events held one Saturday each month at park locations around the city. These events provide citizens the opportunity to participate in the stewardship and care of our City’s park resources and including invasive species mitigation and planting projects. Groups are welcome and invited. Children, supervised by their parents are welcome as well. Events for 2009 will be May 16, June 20, July 20, August 18, September 19, October 17, November 21 and December 19. Contact: Christina Krueger, 425-452-4195.
Bellevue Botanical Garden

Storm Drain Marking
Help educate the community that storm water is not treated by volunteering to glue down colorful, eye-catching markers near public storm drains with the message, “Don't Pollute, Drains To Stream.” Volunteer groups can mark throughout the year, weather permitting (must have a couple dry days so the glue can set). Enhance City Parks
Become a parks steward, docent or naturalist, host visitors centers, plant trees throughout the city and more. Contact: Christina Krueger, 425-452-4195. If you are interested in helping out as a Canoe Guide to provide canoe tours of the Mercer Slough Nature Park, contact Laura Hughes at 425-452-7225.
Waterwise Garden
Learn how to plan and care for your yard and garden in a way that can greatly impact the health of our families and the environment. Volunteer days are the first and third Wednesday of each month from 1-3 pm from Spring to Fall at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. No experience is necessary. Contact: Patricia Burgess, (425) 452-4127.
Stream Team
Volunteer to monitor local streams for salmon, re-vegetate stream corridors with native trees and shrubs, help collect stream bugs for water quality monitoring, or work on a variety of other projects that help protect water quality and enhance stream habitat.
