Out with the "weave." In with the "braid." New, multi-level, "braided" ramps off northbound Interstate 405 are set to eliminate the "weave" of cars getting on and off the highway downtown.
With the completion of the ramps by state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews this past weekend, drivers will take a ramp off Northeast 10th Street, not Northeast Eighth, to get to SR 520. For drivers who use the Northeast Fourth Street ramp to access I-405, there will be no changes.
The new ramps should increase safety by reducing congestion-related collisions and improving traffic flow in downtown Bellevue and on I-405.
WSDOT's "It's a new day, a new way" campaign to raise awareness about the modifications will be aided by scores of new directional signs on Bellevue streets to help drivers navigate the changes. WSDOT offers more information, including a diagram, about the Braided Ramps project.
