Bellevue's Best Ideas forum has already seen 42 "best ideas" already posted, as public engagement continues on the 10-year update of the city's Comprehensive Plan. In this forum, open through July 4, you can submit ideas, vote on existing ideas or add comments. What are the trending popular "ideas"? Invest in Third Places, Alternative Transportation Options, and Conduct Routine Television Discussions on Important Issues are currently at the top of the leader board.

All ideas submitted will be added as public comment within the comprehensive plan. The Best Ideas campaign is sponsored by Microsoft and Crossroads Mall. Three $100 Microsoft gift cards and three $50 Crossroads gift cards will be given away at random among those that submit ideas.

Now is the time to think and plan for the future generations of Bellevue!

Sammamish High School students try urban planning
As part of the Comprehensive Plan update process, the city worked with Sammamish High School to support their planning project investigating models of urban planning and researching the Bellevue Comprehensive Plan. Ninth-grade student teams selected one of three neighborhood areas – Eastgate, Lake Hills or Newport Hills – to analyze and study. They evaluated maps of the areas, interviewed community members and ultimately developed their own recommendations.

A select number of the student teams presented their work to the Planning Commission on April 24. City staff is looking forward to having these presentations influence the update of the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

Knute Berger in his May 1 Mossback column asks if Bellevue is the new Vancouver, admitting that the extent and speed at “which immigration…is altering Eastside demographics…is shaping a more ambitious, cosmopolitan view of what Bellevue can and will be…”

We’ve been listening to the community to write the draft work program for the Comprehensive Plan update.

Bellevue’s comprehensive plan captures the community’s vision for the future and provides direction for city regulations and investments. While the current comprehensive plan has served the community well, it was adopted in 2004 and a lot has changed in Bellevue since, including the boom in downtown development, annexation of the Eastgate area and plans for light rail.

The city's board and commission members shared their visions for the future of Bellevue at a January 24, 2013 Joint Forum. Then, at a Tuesday, January 29, 2013 public event held at the Crossroads Community Center, residents and stakeholders shared their visions for the future of Bellevue. Participants summarized their discussion and pursued topics in more detail.

The update is an opportunity for the City Council to consider changes to policies concerning key topics, and will ask residents and businesses to suggest changes that help the plan remain relevant to the community. The update will also include new population and growth figures and changes to the community. It will reflect development that has occurred in the last decade and changes to state laws and regional policies.
