With the installation of native trees and shrubs along Forest Drive, the first phase of improvements to the streetscape is nearing completion. The city wants feedback from Forest Drive residents on the work done so far.
The city is working to improve the appearance and functionality of Forest Drive, and the Parks & Community Services Department is undertaking a public streetscape design process. As funding allows, landscape and right of way improvements along the street are being implemented.

Your Input Wanted
Invasive blackberry bushes and declining trees were removed from the right of way along Forest Drive in 2008. Over the last several months, the city has planted native trees and bushes in the right of way. Please contact Melissa Brown (425-452-4100 or MLBrown@bellevuewa.gov) if you have feedback regarding the following:
- Do you have any suggestions about the work so far?
- The city plans to maintain the areas of new plantings. Do you have any questions about maintenance?
- Do you have any questions about future phases of this project and planting on Forest Drive?
- Would you like to set up a meeting with city staff to talk about this project?
- Forest Drive feedback flyer
In January and March of 2008 the city hosted public meetings to solicit feedback on the project. Various meetings with individual homeowners associations have been scheduled upon request.
Project Updates
- Improvements to the Somerset median are underway: Landscaping is being added and irrigation installed at the intersection of Forest and Somerset drives. A new Somerset entry sign will also be installed this winter, once permits have been issued.
- Neighborhood entry portals: Installation of signs for Coal Creek Parkway and Lakemont Boulevard is complete. Landscaping will begin this spring.
Background
The city has recognized opportunities to improve the appearance and functionality of Forest Drive. This presents an opportunity to design Forest Drive with a consistent theme that can be implemented into the future as opportunities arise.
The goals of the Forest Drive design process are to:
- Identify and address streetscape and forest management issues and inequities within the public right of way.
- Prioritize early implementation of landscape projects.
- Develop a tool kit for Neighborhood Enhancement and Neighborhood Match projects.
- Provide a design vision for future streetscape improvement projects along Forest Drive. This will also be useful in guiding landscape enhancements by identifying opportunities and constraints.
The Forest Drive Streetscape planning process does not encompass traffic issues or private property matters.
For help in understanding the character of Forest Drive and how project implementation may proceed into the future, the city contracted with JGM Landscape Architects to provide a conceptual design of Forest Drive based on the current usage, opportunities and constraints. This design recognized several existing conditions (listed below) and provided suggestions on how these areas may be improved.
- Mixed woodlands
- Neighborhood gateways
- Storm swale/path
- Ornamental plantings
- Curb, gutter and sidewalk
- Portal markers
JGM used the above conditions to create a draft conceptual design for the future of Forest Drive.
